Bulk storage of oil and chemicals is becoming increasingly
common and represents a major threat to the water environment.
Drums, IBCs and other containers should always be stored
in a bunded area, preferably under cover (to prevent rusting and damage
to the containers from the elements). A bund can consist of a raised
wall, a stand alone sump and drainage system (both of suitable construction
and impermeable to water or the materials being stored within it), plastic
or metal spill pallets, storage cabinets or units.
Bulk tanks should be set within a bund of appropriate
construction. The walls and floor must be impermeable to the materials
stored within it, and there should be no external valves or drainage
points.
The new Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations
2001 give strict guidelines on acceptable construction and form of bunded
storage tanks for oils including petrol, diesel, synthetic, mineral
and vegetable oils.
Skips and containers for general waste should be kept
under cover and in a suitably bunded area to prevent contaminated liquid
leaching from the waste and entering site drains.
