Legislation and best practice guidelines dictate
that hazardous chemicals should be safely and appropriately stored within
a bunded area.
The Environment Agency Guidelines (PPG26) state that a
bund must be able to hold a volume of 110% of the single largest container
stored or 25% of the total volume stored (for a number of containers)
whichever the greater.
For instance, 6 x 205 litre drums of oil should be stored
in a bund with a capacity of 308 litres
(Calculated as (6 x 205 litres) x 0.25 = 307.5, which is greater than
205 litres x 1.1 = 225.5)
Bunds are essential for pollution prevention, whether
you store a few drums of oil or thousands of litres of acids and alkalis,
whether the contents are product or waste.
